Celebrating Seniors’ Appreciation Day at the Vancouver Aquarium

by | Oct 15, 2025 | Community Outreach

On October 3, 2025, Wavefront Centre for Communication Accessibility’s Better at Home Program hosted a Seniors’ Appreciation Day event in recognition of the International Day of Older Persons, a day to celebrate the contributions of older adults and highlight the importance of accessibility and inclusion at every stage of life.

This year, our seniors enjoyed a special trip to the Vancouver Aquarium, where 20 Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing participants explored the wonders of marine life together. The visit provided not only an engaging and educational experience, but also a joyful opportunity to connect with friends and the community.

Barry, one of the attendees, shared his excitement about visiting the aquarium for the first time:

“I was able to touch the starfish and jellyfish. It was my first time visiting the aquarium and I’ve lived in Vancouver for over 26 years,” he said, adding that accessibility for people who are Deaf makes a huge difference in their lives.

Marie, a DeafBlind senior, appreciated the accessibility supports available during the visit:
“I am grateful that most of the exhibits were on the same level. With low vision, I didn’t have to worry about climbing stairs, and my intervenor described everything so clearly.”

Bryan added that his favourite part was the 4D Bugs movie, and shared a lighthearted story:

“When the movie showed bugs crawling on the floor, I could feel them on my feet! Then my hearing aid batteries died – but I had spares and managed to change them during the movie.”

The Better at Home Program, part of Wavefront Centre’s Seniors Outreach Services, provides Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing seniors with inclusive events and opportunities for social connections. Through activities like home visits, social meals, and special outings, the program empowers seniors to stay active, live independently, and remain connected to their communities.

Wavefront Centre extends heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers and staff who made this celebration possible, and we wish all seniors a belated happy International Day of Older Persons.
