Panelists  Biographies:

  • Joy Borgonia is a dedicated  Employment Placement Specialist with over five years of experience. She identifies and matches job seeker skills and career goals with employer needs. Joy holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and is known for her interpersonal skills, her ability to understand the needs of both employers and job seekers, and her tireless dedication to helping Deaf and hard of hearing individuals find sustainable employment. Joy is a Career Certified Development Practitioner Candidate with the BC Career Development Program and expects to be fully certified in 2024.

  • Maxine Dominelli is a devoted professional with 17 years of experience at Wavefront Centre. Diagnosed with profound hearing loss in early childhood, Maxine relied on lip-reading for communication despite wearing hearing aids. Her life changed dramatically 12 years ago when she received a cochlear implant, opening up a new world of sound and communication. Maxine is passionate about supporting others with hearing loss and is committed to making a difference in the community.

  • Jessica Niemela is a pediatric audiologist in Vernon, BC. She identifies as a person with hearing loss and wears hearing aids. She is  Secretary for the Board of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association-BC Chapter, and Event Coordinator for the CHHA-BC Youth Peer Support Program in the Okanagan region. Jessica also serves on the Provincial Language Services Community Engagement Committee and the Interior Health Accessibility Committee.

Moderator: 

  • Dr. Ruth Warick, is the Director of Programs and Services at Wavefront Centre for Communication Accessibility. Through her work, she has been involved in projects related to an accessible environment, access to technology, and transportation access. She oversees three Departments for Wavefront Centre: Community Outreach Services, Accessible Communication Services, and Community Research. She works to improve access and services for persons who are Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing.She is President of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association, CHHA-BC, and Vice-President of the International Federation of Hard of Hearing People.
