Position: Staff Interpreter – American Sign Language/English

Position Summary:

 The Staff Interpreter is responsible for providing community ASL interpreting services for the Accessible Communication Services department, as well as supporting the department where necessary. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Provides community interpreting services for Wavefront Centre, both on and off-site, including virtually
  •  Supports the team where necessary 
  • Works as an integral part of the Accessible Communication Services department 
  • Assists with drop-in clients for English-ASL translation of documents, as needed 

ABOUT YOU, THE CANDIDATE 

Must be a graduate of a recognized Interpreter Training Program and have a minimum of 3 years interpreting experience. 

 

Qualifications

  •  Holds an active membership with WAVLI 
  • Open to working towards qualification to become an interpreter for the Medical Interpreting Services
  • Demonstrated sensitivity working in a culturally diverse environment
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality requirements
  • Innovative problem-solver
  • Strong written communication skills and proficiency in various computer programs as well as familiarity working in a networked MS Office Windows environment
  • Interest in emerging technologies and practices for interpreting/real-time captioning services
  • Good organizational and scheduling skills, team player, good interpersonal communication skills and ability to work in a variety of settings
  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search
  • The successful candidate is required to have a vehicle for travel to and from appointments

Established in 1956, Wavefront Centre for Communication Accessibility is a BC based, charitable not-for-profit organization operating as a social enterprise. Wavefront Centre delivers innovative services in Accessible Communications, Audiology and Communication Devices, Community Outreach and Community Research that assist people who are Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing in achieving full communication accessibility.

Compensation Range: $70,000 to $79,534 per year 

Hours of work:

The typical hours of work are 9:00am to 5:00pm (negotiable), Monday to Friday, flexibility is required. Incumbents may be asked to work evenings or weekends from time to time.

Position: Booking Coordinator

The Booking Coordinator is required to work onsite (in person) at Wavefront Centre’s Vancouver head office and is responsible for client services with regard to intake of requests and responding promptly by booking appropriate services, negotiating rate and payment, fulfilling requests and confirming results. The Booking Coordinator also provides additional support, as required, to the Accessible Communication Services team. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Intake accessible communication services requests (e.g., interpreting, captioning, translation); confirm receipt of request in a timely manner.
  •  Determine and book appropriate service(s) 
  •  Develop quotes and negotiate payment 
  •  Input request into database and broadcast, or email, to fill the request 
  • Confirm fulfilled request with client or organization/service
  •   Provide data reports as required 
  • Assist with drop-in clients for English-ASL translation of documents as needed and maintain records for all drop-ins 
  • Respond to and triage client complaints 
  • Provide coverage for department roles as required–e.g., breaks, sick and vacation days, and relief of reception services at the front desk 

 Administration: 

  • Organize schedule ensuring primarily staff interpreters fill appointments; maximize number of fulfilled requests 
  • Maintain/input/reconcile database information
  • Invoice for services rendered and reconcile receipts
  • Support department with community engagement, as required
  • Provide additional administrative support to the team as required
  •  Other related duties as assigned

Compensation Range: $21.25 to $28.75 per hour 

Hours of work: 

This role offers 35 hours of work per week. The typical hours of work are 8:00am to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday. Incumbents may be asked to work overtime from time to time.

Position: English-ASL Translation Expert – Contract Position

We are seeking contractors who would be responsible for reading, understanding, and translating written texts from English to American Sign Language. The contractors would be responsible for video recording, reviewing for quality, and editing as necessary.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Read, research, and translate written English into American Sign Language. Materials include single to multi-page documents and website materials.
  • Relay concepts and ideas accurately between languages.
  • Consult experts as necessary.
  • Create a new text in the target language that reproduces the content, meaning, and style of the original.
  • Edit and proof American Sign Language to accurately reflect English text.
  • Receive and submit assignments electronically by the deadline.
  • Use dictionaries and glossaries for reference.
  • Translate both legal terminology and colloquial language in business, government, and community texts.
  • Collaborate with team members and clients as required.
  • Stay up to date on technological tools and practices for successful translation work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Heritage/native language user of American Sign Language.
  • Member in good standing with respective provincial sign language interpreting association.
  • 5+ years of experience demonstrated through a portfolio of work and written references.
  • Understanding of Deaf culture.

Technical Requirements

  • This role requires the individual to meet the following requirements.
    • Have equipment for high quality video recording.
    • Have equipment/software to be able to open and view text and video files in a variety of formats.
    • Have solid coloured professional wall background for recording.
    • Have professional attire for recording.
